This medication is used to treat certain types of serious (possibly fatal) irregular heartbeat (such as persistent ventricular fibrillation/tachycardia). It is used to restore normal heart rhythm and maintain a regular, steady heartbeat. Amiodarone is known as an anti-arrhythmic drug. It works by blocking certain electrical signals in the heart that can cause an irregular heartbeat. This medication is used by people with a history of certain types of irregular heartbeat (paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation). It helps to reduce the risk of going to the hospital for atrial fibrillation. Dronedarone is known as an antiarrhythmic drug. This medication should not be used by people with a certain type of irregular heartbeat (permanent atrial fibrillation) due to the increased risk of serious side effects.

This medication has restored my hear to a strong regular rhythm. However, my doctor has told me I can only take it for a short period of time. He will substitute another medication in a couple of weeks.

After taking this medication, for over ten yrs, my A/F is no longer controlled ,so having ablation soon, but the side effects, are really awful, besides the light sensitivity, my Doctor thinks it has damaged my lungs, as I'm having frequent bouts of breath less. without any exertion . I, waiting for lung function tests,. but concerned if this is permanent damage. does anyone have these problems?

Taking Multaq and Pradaxa also Metoperol 25 mg 2 x a day. Began Multaq in 4/2013 and was effective at first. However, now I usually have some problems with irregular heart beat two to five days a week. Sometimes continues for several hours at a time. Minor shortness of breath and fatigue after climbing one flight of stairs.

I am 65 and have had 3 Heart Failures with AF residual. After Open Heart and other "cures", I finally had to discontinue Multaq as no apparent change in my condition and due to the HIGH cost. I have since substituted Amiodarone for great savings.

Have been taking 8 months for AF. Have developed severe pain in all joints which Dr. dismisses as being side effect.
