Lariam vs Malarone

LariamLariam MalaroneMalarone
This medication is used to treat and prevent malaria. This medication contains 2 medicines: atovaquone and proguanil. It is used to prevent and treat malaria caused by mosquito bites in countries where malaria is common. Malaria parasites can enter the body through these mosquito bites, and then live in body tissues such as red blood cells or the liver. This medication is used to kill the malaria parasites living inside red blood cells and other tissues. In some cases, you may need to take a different medication (such as primaquine) to complete your treatment. Both medications may be needed for a complete cure and to prevent the return of infection (relapse). Atovaquone/proguanil belongs to a class of drugs known as antimalarials.

I have lived in West Africa for 7 years now. My company requires me to take Malarone or be sent home. I have had the normal side effects like mouth cold sores and some stomach umpset but none beyond that. Those that come to Africa for the first time should be careful when attributing diarrhea to the malarone... Most likely would have gotten the diarrhea either way... We have 400 expats working and living together and we compare symptoms and issues... very rarely do we see reactions as described by some of the other reviewers... Follow the direction... take plenty of water and 99.5% of the time you should be OK... Only concern we have is the long term effects on the liver.
