Loperamide vs Morphine

LoperamideLoperamide MorphineMorphine
This medication is used to treat sudden diarrhea (including traveler's diarrhea). It works by slowing down the movement of the gut. This decreases the number of bowel movements and makes the stool less watery. Loperamide is also used to reduce the amount of discharge in patients who have undergone an ileostomy. It is also used to treat on-going diarrhea in people with inflammatory bowel disease. Loperamide treats only the symptoms, not the cause of the diarrhea (e.g., infection). Treatment of other symptoms and the cause of the diarrhea should be determined by your doctor. Do not use in children younger than 6 years unless directed by your doctor. This medication should not be used in infants younger than 24 months.morphine Oral is used to help relieve moderate to severe pain. Morphine belongs to a class of drugs known as narcotic (opiate) analgesics. It works in the brain to change how your body feels and responds to pain.

I got very sick with diarrhea and stomach pain, and my doctor prescribed Loperamide to me and the diarrhea stopped almost immediately. Now and then I get diarrhea and I take Loperamide and it goes away.

I have been on 100mg 3 times a day for about 16 years now. You most definitely build up a tolerance for this drug. My pain doctor switches it about every 3 years to Oxycontin 80mg. That seems to help with the tolerance build up. Hope this helps someone out there!
