It affects a certain natural substance (serotonin) that causes narrowing of blood vessels in the brain. It may also relieve pain by affecting certain nerves in the brain. Side effects with Maxalt are the worst I have experienced. Side effects with Maxalt are; heart throbbing or pounding, trouble breathing, drowsiness, dizziness, low/decrease in energy and vomiting. If we take Maxalt at work and experience symptoms, how productive are we going to be, IF we are able to continue working? Yes, the headache may have been stopped, but the rest of the side effects can remain for longer than seventy two hours and our lives will be disrupted. The more “infrequent” side effects of Maxalt include; slowing of the heartbeat, abnormal heart rhythms, increased heart rate, chest pain, chest tightness, numbness and tingling sensation, depression, eye irritation, high blood pressure, incomplete or infrequent bowel movements, joint pain, muscle spasm, muscle stiffness, muscle pain, involuntary quivering, temporary redness, nausea, difficulty swallowing, gas, diarrhea, change in feeling of body temperature, and confusion. I have experienced the less common side effect of slowing of the heartbeat after taking Maxalt and it was one of the worst things I experienced. My resting heart rate dropped to around 40 bpm (not normal for me) and if I moved in the slightest, I became extremely dizzy and nauseous. I did call my doctor during this experience and his advice was to take another and if the symptoms did not subside within another hour, to go to the hospital to be evaluated. The symptoms did not go away and I was sick for an additional two days after the dosage. Many will say that almost any medication can have these side effects, but is that the standard of acceptance we have come to? To control our migraines, we will accept that these risks involved are “normal?” Maxalt does do its job in most cases by stopping the migraine from progressing. It is easily accessible as well as fast and comes in the simplest form of release. But, those are all of the positive things I have to say about this medication. For me, the negative outweighs the few positive.

This drug has the potential to improve my migraine/sinus headaches. I haven't been on this long, but it's been pretty effective. Time will tell if I have to use other headache medicines to aid with. By the way, my doctor told me to take this by putting the pill under my tongue and letting it start to dissolve and then swallow with water.

I have been suffering with daily headaches for about 5 years. I started Treximet when it was new and it was the only medication that worked for me. My headache goes away within 20 minutes and I have minimum side effects, occasional tiredness. At first I could only get 9 pills a month and now I can get up to 18 pills a month which still isn't enough when you wake up with a headache daily. However, my quality of life is so much better. I tried eveything from maxalt, relpak, botox, acupuncture, daily medications like topomax and even infusions. None of these worked. Treximet has been like a miracle drug for me.

I was diagnosed with migraines when I was in high school. I was prescribed medication but it didn't work so I went a long time suffering through my headaches. About 20 years ago started taking Imitrex and it worked for a long time. But it stopped being effective and I switched to Relpax. Relpax stopped working well so I switched this year to Treximet. It works very well without any side effects. Although I experience weight gain when I take it like someone else wrote. But I am very pleased with this medication.
