Niacin vs Nicotine

NiacinNiacin NicotineNicotine
Niacin is used with a proper diet and exercise program to help lower "bad" cholesterol and fats (LDL, triglycerides) and raise "good" cholesterol (HDL) in the blood. It is generally used after non-drug treatments have not been fully successful at lowering cholesterol. Niacin is also known as vitamin B-3 (nicotinic acid), one of the B-complex vitamins. It may be used with or without other medications. Lowering "bad" cholesterol/triglycerides and raising "good" cholesterol helps prevent strokes and heart attacks. Lowering fats may also help reduce the risk of pancreas problems (pancreatitis) in people at risk. In addition to eating a proper diet (such as a low-cholesterol/low-fat diet), other lifestyle changes that may help this medication work better include exercising, losing weight if overweight, and stopping smoking. Consult your doctor for more details. This medication can help you quit smoking by replacing the nicotine in cigarettes. The nicotine in tobacco is an important part of cigarette addiction. When you stop smoking, your nicotine levels drop quickly. This drop can cause withdrawal symptoms such as craving tobacco, nervousness, irritability, headache, weight gain, and difficulty concentrating. Using the inhaler can replace the hand-to-mouth habit of smoking. Stopping smoking is hard and your chance of success is best when you are ready and have made a commitment to quit. Nicotine replacement products are part of a total stop-smoking program that includes behavior change, counseling, and support. Smoking causes lung disease, cancer, and heart disease. Stopping smoking is one of the most important things you can do to improve your health and live longer.

I just started this regimen, i.e., slo-niacin. To date (4 days) the effect has been a slight stomach discomfort but will continue to take this medication shortly after supper (not before bedtime) since I still have some food in the stomach to absorb the pill. I find taking it before bedtime 10:30 on a relatively empty stomach causes some stomach irritation.

My wife and I started the niacin program, 1500 mgs/day, almost twenty years ago. It has worked wonders for both of us....we use it religiously and eat normally. Time release tablets work the best.

Wanted to try this to quit smoking and help with the hand mouth habit. I had already cut back to about 5 cigarettes a day , so again I'm looking for the hand mouth habit!! I have not even used a cartridge yet,and won't!! The burning sensation in my mouth is horrible. My mouth feels like it is on fire all the time. It has affected my taste on everything and not for the better. It has been 4 weeks and I am still waiting for the burning sensation to go away. Now I'm not sure if it will ever go away. Smoking wasn't this bad. STAY AWAY FROM the NICOTROL INHALER.

I smoked for 39 years, and like everyone else have tried all the classic methods and failed with evey one, sometimes multiple times. I started using the inhaler 12 days ago, and am having tremendous luck with it so far. The nicotine in it is so low, but does satisfy the urge. It is recomended that you use it for 3 months, which is fairly expensive, but just the same as cigarettes. They are 10.50/pkg. where I am. I am finding them so useful and effective, I was even able to have a glass of wine with them ~ alcohol in any amount has always been my downfall when trying to quit smoking. I highly recommend this product, for its ease of use and effectiveness.
