I am currently enrolled in a methadone program and this drug, phenytoin, (dilantin) metabolizes(burns off) the methadone sooner than normal. I'm experiencing the unmistakable feelings of whithdrawal now where before there had been none. I dose at the clinic when the doors open at 6 am. By that evening, 8:00pm or so, I feel the "jones" or withdrawal start. Most common, irritablility, aggitation, cold sweats, and anxiety for my next dose are what I've been experiencing these past few days. It is uncomfortable and annoying to say the least but I continue to take it to satisfy my girlfriend. She is convinced that I'll have another episode(siezeure) if I stop taking the dilantin. I mean, it concernes me also, but the feelings of early withdrawal do suck. I'm currently looking into antother medication(Zonisamide)that claimes to not affect the methadone level. We will see.

After years of fighting Depression the new Dr. tried this med and it started to work for the better. I didn't know I was bi-polar but my new wife did and she wasn't afraid to speak up as she too deals with depression.

Have been taking from 750 to 1000mg for about 5 years. Weight gain seems to be the most noticable side effect, 10-12 lbs., then infrequent fluctuations of approx. 5 lbs or so. I also take sertraline; buproprion, propranolol, trazodone. Mild side effects overall.
