| This medication is used to prevent gout and gouty arthritis. It will not treat a sudden/severe attack of gout and may make it worse. Probenecid belongs to a class of drugs known as uricosurics. It lowers high levels of uric acid in your body by helping the kidneys to get rid of uric acid. When uric acid levels get too high, crystals can form in the joints, causing gout. Lowering uric acid levels may also help your kidneys. Probenecid is sometimes used along with penicillin antibiotics (e.g., penicillin, ampicillin, nafcillin) to increase antibiotic blood levels. This increase makes the antibiotic work better at treating certain infections. Probenecid works by decreasing the kidneys' ability to remove the antibiotic from the body. Probenecid should not be used in children younger than 2 years. | Febuxostat is used to lower uric acid levels in people with gout. | Add Probenecid review I am taking PROBENECID/COL 500MG G/O.5M daily with food. It stops arthritis and helped wiped-out GOUT from my joints. Usually take with food at lunch, when I had bad cough, Doctor gave me AVELOX 400mg one-a-day for 10-days, had to stop Probenecid while taking Avelox during lunch time of fear both are high MGs and might cause problem. Dr. didn't know this as my own judgement due to the number of drugs I am taking. Good news is I had no side effect while taking AVELOX, and am now back to Probenecid at Lunch-time with food and no side effect. This WebMD have all the informations I can look up to help me with the medications. I, was having painfull episodes of Gout my doctor found high uric acid levels in my urine and blood, you can expect your symptoms to get worse at first than start to fade, now I'M taking 1 a day with no more Gout attacks,and no side affects if you drink plenty of fluids. On Uloric 'successfully' for about 6 mos. Love it EXCEPT my Dr noticed my CKD blood tests increasing in bad #'s. Uric acid is drastically down, no flares, but experiencing severe muscle pain in lower legs. It's like a cramp or severe stiffness in calfs as if I had worked out a lot. Walk like Frankinstein as legs are so stiff. I'm quitting another statin drug first for 2 weeks to see if that eliminates problem. If it doesn't the plan is to go off Uloric 2 weeks or more to see if stiffness goes away. I hope so. If not will have to go back to allopurinol and indo as needed. Daily dose of 80mg Uloric + 0.6mg Colcrys has given me 2 years of Gout free living. The accumulation of tophi on my elbow and knuckles have almost disappeared. I no longer worry about eating the wrong foods. I have very few gout attacks and most attacks are mild. I do not take any other gout medicine on a regular basis for gout. Before I was having at least one attack monthly lasting 2-3 days. | |||
