Hydroxychloroquine vs Quinine

HydroxychloroquineHydroxychloroquine QuinineQuinine
Hydroxychloroquine is used to prevent or treat malaria infections caused by mosquito bites. It does not work against certain types of malaria (chloroquine-resistant). The United States Center for Disease Control provides updated guidelines and travel recommendations for the prevention and treatment of malaria in different parts of the world. Discuss the most recent information with your doctor before traveling to areas where malaria occurs. This medication is also used, usually with other medications, to treat certain auto-immune diseases (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis) when other medications have not worked or cannot be used. It belongs to a class of medications known as disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). It can reduce skin problems in lupus and prevent swelling/pain in arthritis, though it is not known exactly how the drug works. This medication is used alone or with other medication to treat malaria caused by mosquito bites in countries where malaria is common. Malaria parasites can enter the body through these mosquito bites, and then live in body tissues such as red blood cells or the liver. This medication is used to kill the malaria parasites living inside red blood cells. In some cases, you may need to take a different medication (such as primaquine) to kill the malaria parasites living in other body tissues. Both drugs may be needed for a complete cure and to prevent the return of infection (relapse). Quinine belongs to a class of drugs known as antimalarials. It is not used for the prevention of malaria. I have only been on it for a couple of weeks but I have been experiencing nausea and stomach pain. I am going to tough it out until February 2013 when I see Doctor and then decide. Joint pain not bad most times.

Been on this medication for 5 months now. I am always so tired and sleepy. I was not that way before. It does however help the inflammation in my joints. Also I have to have my eyes checked every 6 months to make sure this drug is not effecting my vision. Is it worth all this I don't know. My pharmacist suggested instead of 2 tablets a day take 1 and half. I am going to try this and see what happens.

I have suffered for years with leg cramps and have been using quinine for the past ten years without any side effects. It has been a saviour for many a sleepless knight due to the leg cramps. I can't get it in the US and have to go to Canada to get an RX filled as I can't afford the cost in the US and my medical does not cover it. My md will no longer give me an RX and I am at a loss as to what else to use. Miraplex does not work.

This medication has not worked for me. I have very itchy lower arms and stomach pains. It also leaves a very bitter taste in mouth as well. I think I would rather do without
