| Lansoprazole is used to treat certain stomach and esophagus problems (such as acid reflux, ulcers). It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. It relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough. This medication helps heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, helps prevent ulcers, and may help prevent cancer of the esophagus. Lansoprazole belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). If you are self-treating with this medication, over-the-counter lansoprazole products are used to treat frequent heartburn (occurring 2 or more days a week). Since it may take 1 to 4 days to have full effect, these products do not relieve heartburn right away. For over-the-counter products, carefully read the package instructions to make sure the product is right for you. Check the ingredients on the label even if you have used the product before. The manufacturer may have changed the ingredients. Also, products with similar brand names may contain different ingredients meant for different purposes. My husband took this drug beginning December 2011. In May of this year, he became ill and test showed that he now has kidney failure due to taking this drug. He no longer takes it for his heartburn. He almost died from taking this, plus had to be on dialysis or a transplant list. Thankfully, the reason for the kidney failure was found and he was taken off the drug in time. He is still having ... Prilosec OTC helped with my GERD, but after 5 days of taking it I had to stop because I got a rash and my hands, ankles and feet became swollen. It totally helped me....except when I stopped taking it after the 14 days....the heartburn came back. I kept taking it because it worked. I had an endoscopy and they said nothing was wrong with me....but I still have constant heartburn day and night for the past 7 years. I am worried about the long term use of this product, but I can't stop it because it helps. I dislike going to doctors so I will ... | |||
