This medication is used to treat the symptoms of a prostate gland condition called BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia, also known as enlarged prostate). It is an alpha blocker that works by relaxing the muscles in the bladder neck and prostate. Relaxing these muscles leads to relief of symptoms of BPH such as the feeling of needing to urinate frequently or urgently, difficulty in beginning the flow of urine, weak stream, and the need to urinate during the middle of the night. This medication should not be used to treat high blood pressure.Doxazosin is used alone or with other drugs to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. This medication works by relaxing blood vessels so blood can flow more easily. Doxazosin is also used in men to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia-BPH). It does not shrink the prostate, but it works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and part of the bladder. This helps to relieve symptoms of BPH such as difficulty in beginning the flow of urine, weak stream, and the need to urinate frequently or urgently (including during the middle of the night). Doxazosin belongs to a class of drugs known as alpha blockers.

I have used this medication for quite some time. It seems to have taken care of my problems with my prostate and kidney stones.

I have been on this drug for 15 months. I feel less lightheaded than with Flomax. Recently, my pharmacist switched to another lab and I have far less episodes of lightheadedness. My physician recommended using more salt as a way to raise my BP. I have low BP because I have been an athlete since age 14; my current resting pulse is 50.

Along with small but significant changes in diet (i.e. no beer, avoid gaseous foods or food combinations later in the day) I have now avoided trips to the ER for 3 yrs (I have a VERY large prostate). It definitely helps in keeping the plumbing going. Does make me dizzy when getting up from working out on my machine. I'm taking 6mg. The doc wanted me to take 8mg. but when I tried it, I did not like it (dizziness etc.). I do think it negatively affects ability to get a strong erection but doesn't seem to diminish sex drive (not necessarily a good combination!)

I have been taking 2mg of doxazosin for the past 2 years. My urgency to urinate has decreased drastically and getting up in the middle of the night happens occasionally. For me, when I sit for a long period of time, I have to go to the bathroom more often. Overall, I am pretty satisfied with this treatment with no side effects.
