This medication is used to treat the symptoms of a prostate gland condition called BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia, also known as enlarged prostate). It is an alpha blocker that works by relaxing the muscles in the bladder neck and prostate. Relaxing these muscles leads to relief of symptoms of BPH such as the feeling of needing to urinate frequently or urgently, difficulty in beginning the flow of urine, weak stream, and the need to urinate during the middle of the night. This medication should not be used to treat high blood pressure.Terazosin is used alone or with other drugs to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. This medication works by relaxing blood vessels so blood can flow more easily. Terazosin is also used in men to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia-BPH). It does not shrink the prostate, but it works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and part of the bladder. This helps to relieve symptoms of BPH such as difficulty in beginning the flow of urine, weak stream, and the need to urinate frequently or urgently (including during the middle of the night). Terazosin belongs to a class of drugs known as alpha blockers.

I have used this medication for quite some time. It seems to have taken care of my problems with my prostate and kidney stones.

I have been on this drug for 15 months. I feel less lightheaded than with Flomax. Recently, my pharmacist switched to another lab and I have far less episodes of lightheadedness. My physician recommended using more salt as a way to raise my BP. I have low BP because I have been an athlete since age 14; my current resting pulse is 50.

I started this med due to an enlarged prostate that was causing a VERY weak urine stream. I find that, as long as I take it on schedule, and don't forget doses, my urine stream has improved a great deal, almost to the level of what I considered normal. Oddly enough, though, I think this has led to another problem. I've developed nocturia and often have to get up from bed to urinate. Now that my flow is strengthened due to this med, I often have incontinence if I'm in a deep sleep and the urge doesn't wake me up in time. Not sure of this, of course, but it seems logical.

Had an allergic reaction to this drug. After a couple days a rash broke out on my arms and lower legs (below the knee), and had the urge to urinate about every 15 minutes. Stopped taking drug and urination problems went away but still have rash. Have to go to a dermatologist.
