Doxazosin vs Terazosin

Doxazosin is used alone or with other drugs to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. This medication works by relaxing blood vessels so blood can flow more easily. Doxazosin is also used in men to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia-BPH). It does not shrink the prostate, but it works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and part of the bladder. This helps to relieve symptoms of BPH such as difficulty in beginning the flow of urine, weak stream, and the need to urinate frequently or urgently (including during the middle of the night). Doxazosin belongs to a class of drugs known as alpha blockers.Terazosin is used alone or with other drugs to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Along with small but significant changes in diet (i.e. no beer, avoid gaseous foods or food combinations later in the day) I have now avoided trips to the ER for 3 yrs (I have a VERY large prostate). It definitely helps in keeping the plumbing going. Does make me dizzy when getting up from working out on my machine. I'm taking 6mg. The doc wanted me to take 8mg. but when I tried it, I did not like it (dizziness etc.). I do think it negatively affects ability to get a strong erection but doesn't seem to diminish sex drive (not necessarily a good combination!)

I have been taking 2mg of doxazosin for the past 2 years. My urgency to urinate has decreased drastically and getting up in the middle of the night happens occasionally. For me, when I sit for a long period of time, I have to go to the bathroom more often. Overall, I am pretty satisfied with this treatment with no side effects.

I started this med due to an enlarged prostate that was causing a VERY weak urine stream. I find that, as long as I take it on schedule, and don't forget doses, my urine stream has improved a great deal, almost to the level of what I considered normal. Oddly enough, though, I think this has led to another problem. I've developed nocturia and often have to get up from bed to urinate. Now that my flow is strengthened due to this med, I often have incontinence if I'm in a deep sleep and the urge doesn't wake me up in time. Not sure of this, of course, but it seems logical.

Had an allergic reaction to this drug. After a couple days a rash broke out on my arms and lower legs (below the knee), and had the urge to urinate about every 15 minutes. Stopped taking drug and urination problems went away but still have rash. Have to go to a dermatologist.
